UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3, 1879 THE TEm MHIILllim The World’s Smallest Daily Newspaper, Seth M. Vining, Editor. Vol. 16. Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N. C., MONDAY, FEB. 1, 1943 Weather Saturday: High 47, low 32; Sunday, high 60; low 27. . . . Now that the politicians in power have decided to get rid of Nelson Jackson, Jr., as a mem ber of the Tryon School Board, it will not be out of place to say something good about him. Mr. Jackson is not in competition commercially or politically with nny other individual in Polk County. By hard work and con centration he has made a great success of his business which is national in scope. It brings to Try on and Polk County a lot of reve nue. Mr. Jackson had no political ambitions. But in his civic activi ties he put the same hard work, concentration and enthusiasm that he put into his business. He works as hard without salary for public welfare as he does to make a living. Such men are scarce, and it is unfortunate that the politicians saw fit to remove a man who has had his heart and soul wrapped up in the better ment of the Tryon school. For 20 years or more he has studied the school affairs of the community and has given a lot of time and money in working for the school. It is a poor time to make a change even to put a better man in. Lesser lights are not big enough to put community interests ahead of personal prejudices. One con solation: in naming Mr. Bowen as _Continued on Back Page_ I Bowen Named On School j Board For Tryon-SaJiuda j Representative W. H. McDon ald has introduced two local bills I in the legislature. One of them j nominates the Tryon-Saluda Dis I trict School Board, the personnel being the same as at present with the exception of Nelson Jackson, Jr., who is being replaced by K. A. Bowen of Tr^on. This bill has been sent to the'committee on education for approval or rejection. The other bill concerns the big fill near Supreme Service Station ( where the Highway Department j poured the dirt removed from the i Oak Hall bank 18 months ago. The ravine is claimed by private parties, but the dirt filled it up to make Trade street wider. In order to settle the street line, it takes an act of the legislature. The bills as reported from Ral eigh are as follows: f HB 151—Introduced by McDon j aid, January 26: “To authorize and empower the commissioners of the Town of Tryon to locate and determine the street line along Trade street and the street leading to Godshaw Hill, in the Town of Tryon, in front of the property of W. B. Hodges, known as the Gulf Filling Station property, and to quitclaim title to any part of said property beyond the street line as so de termined.” (As title indicates). Sent to Committee on Counties, Cities and Towns, January 26. HB 188—Introduced by Mc Donald, January 27: “To appoint trustees of the Tryon-Saluda administrative school unit.” (K. A.
